David Snow, my brother-in-law, remembers being carried on his dad's shoulders on a dark night when he was a little boy. He saw the most amazing sight. Sheffield, during a night air raid, was lit up like fairy land.
Having been plucked out of a warm bed and put into his little siren suit he was carried into the air raid shelter.
He remembers also when at school the children sang nursery rhymes in the shelter even when they wore their Mickey Mouse gas masks.
When he travelled on the train to Scotland there was a full waiting room at the railway station, it's cosy fire burning brightly and everybody singing or playing piano accordians. On the train soldiers were sleeping on their luggage and even the baggage racks, and little boys and girls from London were travelling with their tickets pinned to them.
