My experience as nine year old from 1939 to 1945
By laughingRupert
Part one.
When warwas declared my Mother and my two younger brothers and myself were next door having a cup of tea with my aunt Eth when it was announced on the wireless that we were now at war with Germany.
At the time I was only nine and this seemed quite exiting, which as time went by I soon found that War was anything but. I was brought up in the thirtys in Birminghams Small heath, we ware poor so having to go short of food and wareing second hand clothes did not come so hard when Rationing came, but that did not help the hunger pains when all our weeks rations had been used up. Like most people we used every bit of garden that we had to grow vegitables we also kept chickens which helped out with the eggs that they produced.
My Father was a Painter and Decorater and served in the first world war and was badly wounded so he was not called up into the army but like most men and women of his age carried out civilian duties like fire watching and air raid wardens
