I was a small child during the war about 14 years of age. We enjoyed the war years as going into air raid shelters at Stanfield was considered to be fun as the children always got sweets. I remember us having to carry our gas masks everywhere we went but no bombs were ever dropped on our village. Our parents never allowed us to listen to any news during the war. The reality of war hit us most when the Japanese prisoners of war came home. These people were our neighbours and friends but became strangers and kept to themselves. They had been through such a lot. I remember a big party at the end of the war.
