I was out in the city with my friends and 2 American soldiers. And we decided to go to a night club in the city centre. It was a small elite club called Powolnis which was very popular with both civilians and service men and women. We were just sat there talking at around about 9.30 to 10.00pm in the evening.
An announcement came over the speakers that the war was over in Europe. They told us that Winston churchill would be making a speech later on. The whole place suddenly erupted with everybody running round kissing and shaking hands.
Then I decided to leave because I wanted to tell my family what I'd just heard. I got a tram to a small place called Meanwood on the outskirts of the city.
As I got off the tram and walked down the street there was a cinema called the Capitol. Outside there were about 100 people all singing, dancing and cheering. When I stood there I suddenly noticed that all the lights had been switched on. This was very unusual as we'd lived through the blackout for the past 6 years.
I then walked home which was just a short distance from the cinema. As I got into the house my family were sitting in the parlour. I just looked at them both and said "Mum, Dad its all over!!" After they got over the initial news I told them that Churchill would be making a speech about it later on.
It was one of the most memorable days of my life.
