My two mates and myself left the Capitol Cinema in Liscard to find a huge barrage balloon hit by shrapnel, filling the road. We managed to get under it and run for home. It was pitch black and the bombs rained down. The anti-aircraft guns kept up a constant barrage, it was so bad we ran into an air-raid shelter. After a few minutes, we saw sparks on the walls and because of the blackness had not noticed that the roof had not been put on the shelter, the falling shrapnel was hitting the walls and causing the sparks. We ran on homewards 鈥榯il we reached Poulton School, there we stood under the playground shelter for a few minutes, then we ran. As I reached home, there was a huge explosion, a bomb had hit the school.
