In 1942 my father, Eric Mears, who was a Bedfordian, joined the Home Guard. He was issued with an Enfield rifle with 5 rounds of ammunition. He was a seargeant in WW1, so he was familiar with a rifle. When the air raid siren went, he had to cycle to an area to the east of Goldington to observe. When the all clear came he cycled back. Sometimes the all clear came before he got there. One day my cousin and I decided to clean the barrel with a piece of 4x2, a cord and oil, which was stored in the butt of the rifle. This got stuck and we tied the end to an apple tree and we both pulled it through. Later on in the year he joined the royal observer and would plot aircraft for 8 hours at a stretch.
