From our garden in Hythe Road we could see the park and the block of flats on Grange Road which faced the park.
I was in the garden when I heard the doodle-bug coming, it seemed to be very close when the engine cut out but almost simultaneously it struck the flats. (I would estimate it was 200-250 yards away.) I had manage to "dive" in our brick surface shelter (the name of which I can't remember- not Anderson and not Morrison, but I am sure it had a name!).
Once the noise of the explosion subsided I left the shelter to find myself in thick black smoke and dust with visibility almost nil! When the smoke cleared I could see a piece of twisted metal swinging on next doors' clothes line, it was about 3 feet long and quite twisted, swinging silently where a few moments earlier there had been a full line of washing- all of which disappeared!
