My father, Henry Easty, had been injured during the First World War, and had a job to keep the family afterwards. Eventually he got a job with Shell in Ipswich as a Pump Fitter, and he did this during World War Two. He had to go to airfields around East Anglia.

He had several bouts of problems in and out of hospital, but always went back to work. His last bout was in December 1943. He had a very bad haemorrhage. No doctor was available so he walked from Clifford Road to Anglesea Road hospital. When he got to the hospital, they refused to see him because he didn鈥檛 have a Doctor鈥檚 note.

Four hours after he had walked to the hospital with a sample in a tin of what he had brought up from his stomach, they sent an ambulance. My father refused the stretcher and said 鈥淐heerio, I鈥檒l walk out of the house鈥�. He died ten days later, and was buried two days before Christmas, 1943
