One one very dark evening in 1940, I walked out to what seemed like a bright sunny day - the sky had lit up and the sun appeared to be shining a bright red colour. The Germans had launched an air attack and were shelling incendiaries over the City of London. The City was alight with fire. The German's never needed a compass, as their aircradt would follow the River Thames through London. Firemen were trying valiantly to extinguish the configuration with little success.
The next morning, the average Londoner, with their usual pluck, contrived to pick up the pieces.
My uncle and his family were sadly in the wrong place at the wrong time, They had made their way to a shelter in Bermondsey, relieved at the knowlegdge that they had just got there in time. The bombs started falling and hit a surrounding water main. The whole family perished. However, their home remained untouched!
