This story was submitted to the People's War website by Liz Goddard on behalf of Mr Barnett who fully understands the sites terms and conditions.

This is not about my service during the war; this is about soldiers and civilians who in my opinion do not get the thanks they deserve. I am not going to write about the front line soldiers who were the bravest of the brave and I would always give them pride of place. This is about the service corps, the ground crews who looked after the aircraft, the reme who looked after the tanks and any other vehicles that needed any repairs anywhere at anytime. The pioneer companies who repaired roads etc and did all the rotten jobs no one else wanted. The cookes working in field kitchens under fire at times and still brewing up tea and hot food for the soldiers when it was needed. The field hospital staff Doctors and nurses who had to work in very trying conditions and at top speed at times. There are many more that deserve a mention like the Salvation Army personnel who if they saw a dozen soldiers at the roadside would pull up in their little vans and dish out tea and anything else they had available. hero's everyone of them. My own favourite was a lady whose name was Violet that I met in Italy and she always had a cheerful word as well as tea and scones. This recollection is so we don't forget people who worked so hard and sometimes don't get the thanks they should.
