My family and I were standing in the queue at the Ipswich Hippodrome one evening in the forties when my father became aware of an American serviceman behind him who was trying to cope with his British money! They chatted, he sat with us in the Hipprodrome and was invited back to our home for a cup of tea. From that evening onwards, Captain Harry Wheeler, a meteorologist with the U.S.A.F. became one of our family. He knew where to find the key to the backdoor and would make himself at home. Evidence of his having visited would be the chewing gum and other treats left on the mantlepiece for my sisters and me, and a chair drawn up to the fire. His niece, Carolyn Wheeler of Newport, New York, became my penfriend and we corresponded for many years. On several occasions she sent us parcels of clothing and other treats and I remember that the dresses seemed to be so much prettier than our wartime clothing and my sisters and I felt very special in our finery.
