This story has been contributed by Val Potter of Age Concern, Hellifield. It was originally contributed to Age Concern in 1990.
Mr Sutcliffe was at Bristh Ropes at Doncaster, Wakefield and Cleckheaton (there were about 7 wire mills there). (At Dewsbury and Batley they made old clothes into worsted. He was at Doncaster during most of the war - he lived there after his marriage just before the War.
At work, they made steel nets and wire ropes for catching torpedos - they were only partly successful. Mr. Sutcliffe was in the lab. on the research side. British Ropes still have works in Scotland, Wales, Doncaster, Retford etc. It was a closed shop - you had to belong to a Union - the boss wanted it that way. One of the bosses was on the board for war contracts and was usually in London. They were good bosses - especially the older ones.
