As a child of nine I, with many others, had a cardboard gas mask box, but it was very quickly damaged and replaced. Mine was yellow. The base was the size the breathing area and it was about ten inches tall. The lid had two holes through with string attached to the bottom base. If you took the lid off a few inches and swung the whole thing round your head it made a noise like a siren. You could alter the pitch by moving the lid up and down. The kid with the most dents in the lid was considered "cool" and I crossed the park to school each day and banged the tins on all the trees. Great! It was really cool!
