I left school at 14 in 1938. I started working in the Railway office in the May at Queen's Walk. I was at Queen's walk when they bombed the goods yard (May 1941?). About a year after that I got a chance to move up to Victoria Station to the parcels office. I was supposed to be secretary to the boss, but I more or less did everything including sorting the parcels.
I stayed with the Railways till it finished and the men started coming back. When the men and boys came back they took over our jobs. I transferred to a job in the clock tower, but it never had the same feel afterwards.
