One raid on Ashford was carried out by 12 Fokker Wolf鈥檚 of the Luftwaffe, each carrying two bombs. As they left the town they fired their cannon my family鈥檚 farm was hit.
We had a large Dutch barn at the top of the farm, filled with hay. This was shot up and went up in smoke. On another occasion a bomb was dropped in the field near the farm buildings. As it made only a small crater the damage went further with all the houses in our road having suffered some damage that day. We had a door blown out and windows sucked in and later cracks appeared in the walls. At home we had no shelter so we used to sit at one end of the passage, close the doors around us and draw the curtain over the front door. It was the safest place away from the glass.
Many people did not survive that particular raid but we did. It was obviously sad that so many were killed but we were very grateful for our own survival.
