I worked at the Burtons Factory on the East Lancs Road in Manchester and I lived in Swinton. We made uniforms for the Air Force - I was on collars and then I progressed to inspecting and passing them. We used to write letters and tuck them into the pockets of the uniforms. I remember writing, "If you read this, I'd like you to send me a letter" - but unfortunately I never received one.
Enemy planes used to fly over; they used to blow sirens and we had to go the air raid shelters - some of us went underneath the factory where all the pipes were. One day as I was going home an enemy plane flew overhead. I started to run, then I stopped running and swore (which was very very unusual for me) because I realized I couldn't outrun the plane.
It was dreadful - we had friends living in the areas that were blitzed - and we saw them being dug out. We lost friends that way... it was dreadful...
