My father was on an Ack Ack site of the Isle of Wight. One night it seemed very quiet so the he and about half of the other lad were told to go to the NAAFI for a brew.
They had not long been in the NAAFI when the air raid siren went off. Unofrtunately it went off at the same time as the bombs started to land.
My father and his friends ran back to their guns; when my father got to where he thought his gun was, there was nothing but a smoking hole in the ground. The gun and half of the crew had just disappeared.
My father, although he said he was very lucky to have not been there when the bombs fell, always blamed those in charge. When they first got to the island, the searchlights were sighted alongside the guns! The first German bombers sent their bombs down the serchlights to take out the guns.
Luckily, he survived until he was demobbed from Carlisle Barrcks late in 1945.
