This contribution has been submitted on behalf of Lewis Raymond Haddock at Grimsby Central Library. Mr Haddock was born in Co. Durham and was a wireless operator during the War with the 52nd Heavy Artillery.
-----------------

The death I smelt was not the death of battle. This was different. It was the smell of "old death", death that seemed to be still living or perhaps death as a way of life - and then I saw those skeleton like aberations staggering towards me and saw the words I will never forget. "Arbeit macht Frei" in twisted ironwork over the gate.

The Germans were right. Death was a deliverance. "Man's inhumanity to man that even makes the Angels weep". Never should it be forgotten.

So look to your children and then think of the Jews and their children and man's inhumanity to man.

This contribution ends with a poem entitled:

WINGED VICTORY

Forty black nuns habits
Hanging all in place,
Clinging to the wall of death
Lying still in grace.

Cries of 'Holy Mary'
Fears of judgement day,
As dropping on their knees
Bright ovens hear them pray.

Forty starched white collars
Hats winged, as if to fly
Their bodies straight to heaven
But has God heard their cry?
