I can remember being at the Salvation Army hall, and when there was a raid, we all used to shelter under the platform. It had been an old coal store. We used to sing songs during the raids. After the war they discovered that the whole area had been riddled with woodworm.
When we were at home we kept a clothes bag by the bed in case of a raid. That way if you were in the shelter all night and the house got hit, you still had a fresh change of clothes.
I also remember our neighbour. He was an errand boy for the co-op. One day he came home on his trade bike, with a side of bacon in the basket. The raid sounded just as he got home, so he dumped the bike down and went to the shelter. When he came back out both bike and bacon were still there.
