I left Sutton Valence Primary School in 1938 on a Friday. On the Monday I started work on a farm in Offham where we were living at the time. That job was six in the morning 'til six at night Monday to Friday, then six 'til midday on Saturdays with a large sum of wages of ten shillings a week or 50p in new money. I was there six to eight weeks I suppose, then I was a gardener for three or four months.
Then, I went to work for Stevens, that made lorries, range finders etc to do with trucking. When the lorries were built they had a huge generator in the front, generating power for search lights, gun sites and these tracking stations.
I did that 'til the beginning of 1943 when I was called up and went into the army and I was drafted overseas to The Persian Gulf.
