This Pat Humphrey's story as told to Jacqui Brown. The author is aware of the implications of putting her story on the website.
When the anderson shelter was built the family had to follow Pat's grandfather Tom to the shelter. Frances Pat's grandmother ended up in the coalshed as being pitch dark she was unable to see where she was going. Pat landed up across the garden in the rose bushes. From that night Tom had an idea he tied some rope from the washing line through the garden to the anderson shelter so the family could hold on to it to guide them to the shelter.
Pat's uncle Bunny had a dog Patsy the dog would walk with a tin helmet on up and down the garden. Patsy could sense when the german planes were on their way before there was any sign humans could detect. Patsy used to bark to raise the alert and Bunny would sound a hooter to alarm the rest of the neighbourhood. Unfortunately Patsy got hit with shrapnel and had to be put down.
