I have recently lost both my mother & father, Ron & Mary Stone, and have been going through all their personal papers.
My father was in the Grenadier Guards and was at D Day and mentioned in despatches.
They married in 1942 and literally days later Ron was posted back to barracks. I came across a couple of their letters and they are truly moving. They paint a picture of what life must have been like, their hopes, fears & wishes for the future.

My father didn't mention the war much, just bits here & there. He was asked to write his recollections for the Guards but unfortunately he had a fall and thus started a fairly rapid decline.

Unfortunately, he is no longer around to ask.

I have lots of grainy photos - they were all just boys.

Message 1 - Glimpse of life

Jena -
most of us were just boys - especialy at heart ! I read a fantastic story of how a young man joined the Guards at the beginning of the war and served throughout... it's more of a book but you could put your father in the same platoon as they ALL went through the same discipline..and had a bit of fun as well. I can't for the life of me think of the title but when I do - I'll get in touch with you again.
cheers

Message 2 - Glimpse of life

Jena - found one of them - search for "A Bill Brown's Experience" - it's in a few chapters - the early ones are about recruit training - which is a hoot - and you will cry with laughter - then it gets serious - nevertheless - this is what your Father would have gone through and it will sum up what kind of men we were at that time !
good luck
