My story starts in April 1940
We were shipped to Rosyth, mess around on shipping and then sent onto Duformline. We were then told we were going to help Norway. We landed at Mold at the end of April, we were then sent to Lilhammer, here we were put in position to await the enemy, Here we found we had lost all of our heavy weapons and only had rifles and Bren guns for defence. The Germans were already there and when we were attacked all of our campaigns had to withdraw apart form C Company, in which I was serving.
Eventually the Germans broke through and we found ourselves trapped. We escaped capture, through the help of some Norwegian people who took us up into the mountains. There was only 10 of our company left at this stage. Luckily enough there were farms nearby and we to Freehom in Sweden, through the help of a young lady we met there who originally came from Oslo. Her name was Ingaborg Slettin.
It took us 12 days to get there so we got rid of our uniforms and were given civilian clothing at this stage.
We had been moving for 6 or 7 days when we got to a bridge that was not guarded in the day. We went across in two鈥檚 and I crossed with a chap called Bram Derbyshire and as we got down we encountered a German armoured column.
To our surprise the German Commander stopped his column and saluted us and let us by. We realised he thought we were Norwegians and we were scared but got to Sweden and were interned five days later in Sweden. We were repatriated in July to England.
