My Grandma Alice Bowering was not afraid of Hitler! Grandma lived in Upton Park in London during World War II and my parents were worried that she might not be safe from the bombs. They persuaded her to come and stay with them for a while in Romford where they thought she would be a bit safer, because dad had built an air raid shelter at the end of the garden. (This all happened before I was born, but I have heard the story many times.)

One afternoon the air-raid sirens went off when the family was out in the back garden. The three of them were sitting in deck chairs, drinking cups of tea, and enjoying the sunshine. Apparently mum and dad started to head for the shelter right away. Not so Grandma, she refused to be put out, refused to stop enjoying her pleasant afternoon, and refused to be intimidated by the person that she referred to 鈥渢hat so and so Hitler鈥. As the German planes flew over during that daylight raid, there was my Grandma seated in her deck chair, cup of tea in one hand, shaking her fist with the other and cursing Adolph right left and centre! She stayed that way until the All clear sounded!

Message 1 - Grandma and Hitler

Posted on: 26 August 2005 by Ron Goldstein

Dear SandyIsland

Loved your little story.

My own dear mother, of blessed memory, had her own way of dealing with Hitler.

Every time she came across a picture of him, either in a newspaper or a magazine, she would take much delight in removing one of her hairpins and poking out his eyes!

I can't say that it did anything to help the war effort but it afforded much satisfaction to my dear mother who had five sons serving in the forces, one of whom was never to return.

Best wishes

Ron

Hello Ron!

I'm glad you like my tale about my Grandma. She was a feisty old bird! Following your post I started brousing through your war stories. You are a born story teller as far as I am concerned. The story about your time in Rome touched me - where you met up with other Jews and received the gold chain as a gift. Thanks for sharing your memories. It's wonderful to know that all your stories and everyone stories are now recorded and will never be lost.

I lived in the City of London for many years (Queen Victoria Street) and went to school at Sir John Cass in Aldgate, so I know some of the East End of London. Nearly always went to the pictures down the Mile End Road on a Friday night, by the way!

All be Best
Valerie (sandyisland) - now living in New York, but always a Londonder at heart

Message 3 - Grandma and Hitler

Dear Valerie

Thanks for your prompt response and your over generous comments.

With reference to Mile End Road, I recently enjoyed Lee Dickman's story 'The Broken Reed' see: A5007133 and responded with a comment that included the old Mile End Empire.
Go and have a look !
Ron
