This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Elizabeth Perez of Stockport Libraries on behalf of Gordon Taylor and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Taylor fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

I remember being taken by my Mother from Denton to Gartside Hospital. In the morning we walked down past Lewis's Store into Market Street, and down to the bottom of Market Street. We stepped over AFS hose pipes - it seemed like hundreds of them. There were flames in the centre of the Royal Exchange and the heat was intense. I think I saw the tower at the corner of the building fall into the street. It will always be one of my memories.

We were told of the bomb that fell close to the Club House of Denton Golf Club. It partly demolished the building. Why it should have been a target is a mystery. Probably the bomb was dumped at random.
