Frank joined the R.A.F.V.R. in June 1939 as a metal worker. He was called up on 1st September, 1939 and sent to an R.A.F. camp in Glasgow. After 8 months training he was moved around Scotland going to Wick and Inverness. His job was to repair the radiators, petrol tanks and oil coolers on Spitfires and Mosquitos. Then he was moved to Benson in Oxfordshire working on the camera cowling on reconnaissance aircrafts.
He then went overseas and was based at Foggia in Italy on the Adriatic Coast, later he moved on to Tel Aviv in Palestine for 3 months. Then he had 3 months on the Suez Canal and 3 months at Port Said. Eventually he sailed from there and called at Toulouse on his way back to the UK docking in Newhaven. His rank was L.A.C.
