When I was seven I lived in a village called Hales on the Staffordshire/Shropshire border. I had a sister 12 years older than myself, and because of the age difference, I was prone to forgetting her existence.
One day we were told that several childred would be joining us in the village, these were evacuees from Ramsgate and Margate. In the evening a bus arrived full of children who were taken into a room in the school. Families from the village were there to greet them, make a selection and then take them home. I, feeling the need for a sister had already, lined one up, and decided she would come and live with us. My mother and father had other ideas, and I was told so in no uncertain terms, that it wasnt going to happen.
I was very disappointed but never the less made friends with lots of children, that came to the village. Many by the time the war ended were young adults, and decided to settle in the area. I have many memories of the war through the eyes of a child, this is just one of them.
