This poem was submitted to the people's war site by Simon Parnell on behalf of Elizabeth 'Lily' Boardman with her permission. The poem was passed on to her from her mother-in-law Mrs Lillian E Boardman.
Sitting at the fireside bright,
Listening to the news each night,
I think, on hearing of things afar,
We have a lot to thank God for.
Pity the French in this terrible war!
The Belgians, too, are filled with awe!
Losing all they loved so dear,
To a man we hate - but never fear!
Our airman so brave up in the air -
"God bless them" is my daily prayer:
Protecting us by day and by night,
"God give them the strength to defend the right".
Think of the work of the L.D.V.;
Hark to the call of the A.R.P.:
Welcome is the sound of "All Clear!"
Oh! Thank God we are still here!
Think of the men away at sea:
Oh! what will their next moment be?
Facing danger above, below,
Bringing the rations that we need so.
Women to, are doing their bit!
Surely they are "going to it."
Women in the Army only meant for men -
Women who fly - not forgetting the Wren.
Ambulance drivers, out in all weather:
Air Force and Navy, pulling together:
Soldiers waiting along our shore
To give Jerry all he is asking for.
Doctors and nurses come in for praise:
Our Padre, too, for the souls he'd raise -
Thanks to them all we must freely give,
They are the folks who helped us to live!
