We had food rationing during the War. Our mother used to mash parsnips and put yellow food colouring in them. She told us that it was banana and she put it in our sandwiches for school. We thought it was bananas, as we had never tasted them before!

As told to Pauline Shaw of Gateshead Libraries' Special Services Unit on 13th May 2005.

Message 1 - Bananas

Posted on: 31 May 2005 by Fairmary

Hi.. I was delighted at the imagination of your Mother and the thought of parsnip sandwiches! In 1945 my father had to go to India and when he flew back (it took him 3or 4 days in a sea-plane) he bought some banans back with him . I took some into school and sliced them up as no one had seen or tasted them before... We were all about 8 years old!
Thanks for reminding me of that memory!

Message 2 - Bananas

Posted on: 07 January 2006 by thankfulThomasG

In around 1943 a cousin serving abroad sent me two bananas. I remembered them from around the start of the war, I was three when it all kicked off. I ate the now ripened bananas pretty quickly, too bad for my younger brother and parents. My father stuffed the skins with paper and tied them over his machine at work.

My wife was only 10 days old when the war started so she can only remember the fruit from after the war. This was true of so many kids and many didn't know you had to peel the skin off before erating the flesh.
