I remember when war broke out I was in church. I lived in Wilford Village in Nottingham. I was just 15 at that time. I went to work at Boots — I was there when that got bombed — there was quiet a few casualties. After that I went to work at NAAFI Accounts I stayed there until I was 17 ¼ and then I was eligible to join the forces. From then I was in the services and was stationed in London for a long time then went overseas 2 months after D Day. I served all the way through Germany, it was clerical work I was doing. I was in Antwerp when the war finished. The door broke open and someone came in and said that the war was over, we didn’t believe it, they said it had. We went outside and it was true — we ended up dancing in the fountains.
