As a small child living in a Co Antrim village, called Crumlin, close to Langford Lodge (American Air Force Base) in Northern Ireland. I can remember the Americans arriving off the trains. They gave us sweets and money.
My sister and myself and her friend had bracelets made from cents. The Americans gave all the children of the area Christmas parties with Santa Claus. It was the first Santa I had ever seen and it was magic and we all got a toy each.
There were also Garden Fetes which the Americans came to. My Mother bought a raffle ticket and won a big pink and blue toy rabbit.
I can remember the uniforms the Americans wore. They had leather fur lined jackets and boots with high heels. I also remember the Victory Parade when the war ended.
There was an effigy of Hitler burned in the local Park. It went on very late.
