I was 9 years old when war broke out. The first time the siren sounded we all went down to our shelter (which was actually the coal cellar). It was so small we couldn't fit anything into it, only coal, mice and us! All we could do was stand around. We did that for weeks - just stood there! My dad finally managed to fit an electric light fitting! Yay! Shortly after that the pub (on the street) which had been turned into a cafe, had a huge cellar underneath and we slept down there for weeks!
