My Husband was a telegraphist (wireless operator) in the Royal Navy during the war.
He was on duty on M.T.B's (motor torpedo boats) in the English Channel. This flotilla (group of small ships) was formed by Free French Sailors who came to England after France was defeated. An English telegraphist was necessary.
They patrolled the channel to search out and attack enemy shipping.
After the war, we visited an old school friend of mine who had been in the Womens Land Army. She had married a German ex prisoner of war she met when working on the farm. I asked Gunther, her husband, where he had served during the war. To my astonishment, he said he had been a sailor in the German navy, based in the Channel Islands. He was on E-Boats, similar to M.T.B's, but bigger and with guns! He had operated in the Channel at the same time as my husband.
Gunther also mentioned how hungry they all were in the Channel Islands. At night, he said, they often went out into the fields to pick nettles. Apparently, when cooked, they taste a bit like spinach.
