I was born in Coventry but was only 1 when the war broke out. My family moved to Holyberry Hall when I was 2. My dad got a job as a gardener for the hall and we lived in the farmhouse on the estate. Our shelter was built in the front room of the house. Some of the pilots used to fly so low that you could actually see them in the cockpit.

My family used to swap foodstuffs with other people. Living in the country we seemed to be able to get quite a bit. We had an orchard so they had food to swap. My grandfather lived with us and we all used to sit down together every night for dinner.
I had a teddy bear that I loved to death, and although he was almost bald I still took him everywhere. Eventually both his legs dropped off but he was still treasured. Besides the teddy I used to like hoops because we used to invent all sorts of games with them, not just hoopla.
I was a twin and can remember my mum made us both coats with big orange buttons out of blankets. Mum made all the clothes and used to cut down old clothes to make things for us. I can remember how the Americans always seemed to have sweeties for the children.
I moved to Lutterworth in 1958
