My Birthday Card
A few weeks after D Day my Dad, serving in the R.A.F. found himself stationed in Holland and made friends with a Dutch family.
Meanwhile, back in England, at the age of 6 I decided to take a bike ride to the local R.A.F. station about a mile from my home.
I don't remember saying this, but apparently when I arrived home I told my Mum that I had spoken to the sentry at the main gate and told him "My Dad is in a different airforce". The next time Mum wrote to Dad she mentioned my experience with the sentry and what I had said.
The husband of the Dutch family that Dad had befriended was a bit of an artist and when Dad told him what I had said, he drew a Birthday card for Dad to send to me.
I still have this Birthday card which is now 60 years old and I attach a picture of the front page.
