BACK AGAIN
We went back to the dugouts on New Year鈥檚 Eve. Our first duty was to go on guard in the slit trench with the BREN Gun from 11 o clock until 1 o clock. Being a very cold and frosty night not a sound was heard until midnight, then the Germans fired everything they had up in the air. The tracer bullets made it a great fireworks display.
A few days later down came 7 or 8 inches of snow, making it better for washing our hands and faces in the morning.
The Standing patrol weren鈥檛 allowed to wear gloves, overcoats or anything over our ears. We used to go out at midnight and lay in the snow for 1 and a half to 2 hours. The first time the mechanism of the Bren gun and rifles froze up. After that we had to release them every 10 minutes.
