We were living in Brighton at the outbreak of WW2.My Father's Regiment, a Royal Artillery Mobile Anti-Aircraft Unit with Bofors Guns, was based in Preston Barracks.
The Regiment was sent to Belgium as a part of the BEF ( British Expededitionary Force.)and subsequently were evacuated from Dunkerque .
We , my Mother ,Sister and I , went to Kent to be reunited with him while his Regiment was being re-equiped with new Guns.
He received a message that a Landmine had been dropped outside our house and we went, by train,to see the damage.
We passed through the Police cordon to discover that it had not exploded and had been defused. My memory was of two "Sappers" sitting on what appeared to be a large grey cylinder
at the bottom of a hole drinking tea !! They apparantly were waiting to "Steam Out" the explosive !!
My father decided to have our household contents crated - up and placed into storage.
Later , when his Regiment's Guns were deployed on top of Portsdown Hill , above Portsmouth , as a part of that City's defenses he witnessed the burning of warehouses , in one of which were stored all our Worldy Goods.!!
After the war we returned to find our old house in Brighton had remained unscathed !!
