The sirens went about 22-00 hours, and 9 adults and one baby in arms. German aircraft were overhead and the anti-aircraft guns were sounding off. After about 30 minutes, all went quite, and the baby"s mother said to her husband, "go home and make the baby a feed". Off went the husband to his house, but hardly had he shut the door when a string of bombs came hurtling doon. The first bomb had hardly reached the ground when the husband was back in the shelter, white as a sheet."By God,"he said," that was a near thing," I counted the bombs as they were falling,I counted eight. The A.R.P.people counted seven. The marvellous thing was, none of them exploded, and the bomb disposal men dug up seven and none of them had a detonator fitted. In the local church the vicar refered to the village as the HOLY CITY. ( I still think there was eight )
