This story was told to me by my grandmother, Mrs Bessie Hanney. It has been added to the site with her permission and she fully understand's the site's terms and conditions.
During the war, I experienced what, looking back now, must have seemed an extremely amusing incident. As I was leaving the factory where I worked to cycle home for lunch, I came upon a convoy of Army vehicles, stationary at the roadside. There was a thick fog at the time. The officer and charge stepped forward, saying, 'Excuse me, Miss. Could you tell us where we are?'
I explained, and asked them where they were supposed to be - owing to the atrocious weather conditions and lack of road signs etc they must have taken a wrong turn. As it would have been difficult for them to find thir way through the streets of Rugby town, I made the suggestion that, as that was the way I was going, that they follow me, and I would put them back onto their route. This offer they were only too happy to accept. Imagine! A young woman, with rear light swiched on, leading a convoy of Army lorries through the centre of the town and back onto their route. I have often wondered if, with my further directions, they were able to pick up their rendez-vous point.
