This story has been submitted to the People鈥檚 War website by Peter Quinn of the Lancs. Home Guard, on behalf of Wynn Coyle and has been added to the site with Mrs. Coyle鈥檚 permission鈥︹︹

When I was evacuated to Mellor as an eight year old in 1939, I was lodged with a rather strict older couple. My mum came to visit and brought a big 16 square bar of chocolate. I was allowed to keep it in my bedroom, a terrible temptation, but not allowed to touch it until every evening after tea, when I asked, 鈥淐an I have a piece of chocolate please?鈥 Then I could break one piece off and enjoy.

One particular night there was one spare piece 鈥 the old lady put it on top of the whole bar and instructed me to take it back upstairs. On the way the temptation was so great that I ate it, thinking she鈥檇 forget about it. But the next evening she demanded, 鈥淲here鈥檚 the spare piece dear?鈥
I said, 鈥淥h, I must have dropped it!!鈥 and she replied, 鈥淕o back upstairs and find it!鈥 I sat on the stairs for ages and waited till her niece appeared telling her the whole story. The niece said I鈥檇 have to own up and took me by the hand back to her aunt 鈥 and I had to confess and apologise.
Needless to say I didn鈥檛 get any chocolate that night!
