1941 — I was working as a butcher at the Co-op. The night of the blitz which hit the Meadow Lane area really bad. The next morning we were asked to come along to help with the salvage. When we got there we had to drag the meat out with the fire / rescue teams, everything we could get out we did. It was all laid out and we had to sort though it all, cutting out shrapnel and the burnt meat and keeping all the pieces that were ok, as it was food and it was needed — we couldn’t leave it. I was 15.
