The Emmanuel School at Clapham in South London had been evacuated to Petersfield and shared our school (Churchers College) accommodation. When term began we had school each morning and games and outside activities after lunch whilst Emmanuel School had games and activities in the morning and used our classrooms in the afternoon. One morning in the summer of 1941 whilst we were having classes there was the noise of an aircraft and a short burst of machine gun fire followed by a resounding crump and the building shook and some windows in the classroom were broken. We were all told to get under our desks and stay on the floor. As there was no further sound we eventually got up to be told later that a German plane must have seen the Emmanuel School Corps drilling on the playing fields and taken a pot shot, which fortunately missed and also dropped a bomb which fell a couple of hundred yards down the hill towards the town and had landed on the Workhouse. I don't remember if there were casualties from the bomb.
