Mary and Jack were my grandparents and often told the story, about the time Mary was preparing tea in the kitchen which had an old fire range, fortunately because of the warm weather, there was no fire in the grate. She had decided to prepare a salad with food grown on an allotment, Jack shared nearby. All the food was set out when the siren sounded. They both rushed to the shelter. When Jack fished in his pocket for his baccy tin, he realised he had left it at home.During a lull in the air raid he decided to nip home.He slipped his baccy tin into his pocket and was just leaving, when a bomb dropped nearby. All of a sudden, he was engulfed in black choking fumes. He managed to find the back door and gulped in the fresh air. When Mary saw him after the all clear, she couldn't believe her eyes.He was covered from head to toe in soot. When they returned to their house, the mess that waited them took their breath away. They could not see the salad, as this was under five or six inches of soot.Surprise turned to anger, as Mary had pestered Jack many a time, to get the chimney swept in the past.It was all hands to the pumps, to get the house fit to live in again but after some thought Mary could only be thankful, their house was still standing and anyway they had saved the cost, of getting their chimney swept.
