We were entrusted to carry out certain actions off the coast of Norway and then completed the final Russian convoy before VE Day. On reaching an anchorage near Murmansk we were permitted ashore to purchase whatever souvenirs were available. Apart from valueless postage stamps from their post office, the only item available was from the locals who were willing to barter Vodka for warm clothing and chocolate. As we were followed everywhere by KGB policemen we were shocked to see them "take away" the locals who had just provided us with Vodka. If this was an example of Communism we said, "They can keep it."
