It was in 1940 that my sister and i were sent,on holiday!to my aunt returned to take a job in the bank of engand.I being younger, stayed to finish myeducation.A part of the town had been taken over as an internment camp on the west and i remeber that one night, the wether was appalling, some of the internees escaped ans stole a small yacht and set sail for southern ireland, unfotunately,no one had told them that the campass on the boat was faulty and later on they laned on a beach and found that they were in cumberland
some years later, i had joined he air traning corp and was spending a week at the local RAF station, whilst there, there was another escape for a camp on the west of the island , the prisoners had dug a tunnel, lined it with wood and lit it with electic light, they escaped and stole a yachtl,i wasflying at the time and we were told to look out for the escapees, we did not see them and they were told later captured of st david's head in wales
during the summer holidays, i worked on a local farm and we used the internees who came in lots of 10 complete with armed guard. This did not suit the farmer becouse it was impossible to employ ten people in the same place all the time so he complained to the camp commander and was given permission to split the party as long as there was someone with them. There was a lad on 15 looking after prisioners!all by my self.
On my return to london i started a job as apprentice toolmaker abd this was a little while befor the flying bombs started to arrive. When they started comming,we used to go on the roof in the mornings before we started work and wached them flying along.I remember lying in bed one night when the guns started firing,it was before they moved all the guns to the south coast, and after a little while there was an enromous expulsion unit had hit one! The next day it was revealed that the propulsion had gone through the roof of a house in the next street and killed a man lyling in bed.The navigational unit landed in the garden of a friend about a half mile away.
The v2's started coming and one day,at work, there was an explosion and the whole building shook, one had landed in the next street.Everyone looked at their neighbour and said "what was that" and got on with their job.
Things were relatively quiet after thet and,of cource, everyone was elated whrn VE Day arrived. Some friends and i went up to london in the evening,it was full of people, all heading to buckingham palace and trafalger square. The underground was kept running all night and i have neaver seen trains as full as they were since.
