At the end of the war, when peace was declared and my father had just come home from the Royal Navy, Manchester switched the lights back on after the blackout. There were crowds in Piccadilly and all down Oldham Road. The streetlights were gas lamps and the gas lamp lighter lit them all. The blackout curtains were removed from all the shops and everyone was singing, cheering and hugging each other. It was just magic. I think we all realised it was over then!
