I WAS 14 when the war started and we lived just outside of London
I can remember the Battle Of Britain and going down the Air-raid shelter at school and it seemed like an awful long time.
You could hear the planes battling it out in the sky, we did not really know what was happening.
I remember my Dad digging the shelter out with his neighbour. My Grandmother used to tell us stories of the First World War and she mentioned how they used to place the mattresse鈥檚 on the tables, so as soon as the sirens went I used to go and get the mattress鈥檚 down onto the table
Rationing, the things we used to do to make do, sew, knitting and remaking my Fathers coat into a coat for myself by turning it inside out. Adding bits on and taking bits off and remaking clothes was a necessity.
I worked for an American company who made the American version of Jerry-cans or Merricans near where Heathrow Airport is now.
As soon as the war finished the industry just stopped dead, they adapted by making 鈥淒illy Ducks鈥 but then we were all put on the 鈥淒ole鈥 given our cards. Unemployed.
I had a boyfriend who was in the Royal Airforce and sent to Burma and who sadly got killed. I eventually got married and had three wonderful Granddaughters one who鈥檚 name is Lottie Morris
