Mr Ray Caradeuc interviewed by Margaret Le Cras
Transcribers note : Transcription difficult at times because interviewer was nearer the microphone and her interjections sometimes upstage Mr Le Caradeuc, who is rather faint. Where the interviewer鈥檚 comments are relevant they have been transcribed in full.
I鈥︹︹. So you weren鈥檛 exactly short of food? You could sort yourself out?
Ray Caradeuc. Well, my parents were market gardeners. You had plenty of vegetables, you could make soups. It seemed to me starving, and going to bed was the worst part. Frozen. Because all you did in the evening was read. So you were cold, as well as hungry and it was a big house, big rooms, oh, twenty foot square, those rooms.
I鈥︹︹. You could never heat鈥 St Leddards.
Ray Caradeuc. No, the Croutes. Mind you they were very good. We had de Garis, Jack de Garis that side of us, and we had Ernest de Garis our neighbour. [ ] he used to give us a pint of milk and Jack he had peas.
I鈥︹︹. I mean, people did know how to grow round there, and they would have known how to look after themselves, eh.
Ray Caradeuc. Yes, well, we used to help quite a few people鈥

Ray Caradeuc. Ah, well, at the Douit, Cliff [ ] thrashing [ ] they were a nice crowd, all round there.
Ray Caradeuc. We were walking down to the road, because we had to walk down the lane, because you never came out straight from, not his end, our end, and there was a German officer just going to shoot their cat, and he saw us, he told us 鈥淩aus鈥 [ ] we stood there and [ ] and he was going to shoot, but they had Ernest De Garis鈥 big golden retriever, caw he was fat, they had a good meal there, all the cats and dogs were going,
I鈥︹︹. Towards the end, fair game, but they were hungry, eh?
Ray Caradeuc. They were worse than us. We used to call them the limpet army.
I鈥︹ Did they go limpeting?
Ray Caradeuc. oh, every day! They were passing us, they were rocking, especially the older ones, and if they saw anybody looking at them walking, [ ]
