We had a shelter built into the cellar. It was a large square room taking up most of the room downstairs. It opened into a coal cellar (right underneath the pavement) and the doors were glass.
My mother and I slept in a double bed in the cellar. Nearby there had been some heavy bombing and the blast blew out the glass doors. My mother was partially deaf and she didn't hear it. She was laying on the glass asleep and I tried to wake her up to tell her. She got very annoyed and slapped me for waking her up and promptly went back to sleep. The following day she woke up with glass surrounding her and I got another smack for not telling her!
