I was 19 when war broke out. Living at Gowan Road, Willsden, London.
Mother worked at Willesden Junction at an Aircraft factory 鈥 she was employed 鈥 鈥淒oping on the aircraft鈥. Because of this she was given a pint of milk a day (paint probably contained lead) 鈥 when she tried to take the milk home with her she was not allowed to 鈥 it was provided only for the workers.
I well remember still when a local school caught fire having been hit by a bomb and also remember the Battle of Britain and seeing the East End of London on fire.
One night when a bomb fell a few streets away our windows were blown out but luckily we had no bombs drop on our house.
Incendiary bombs fell on houses opposite and my friend and I helped put the fire out with stirrup pumps.
I was married at St Andrews Church, Willesden when I was 21 (1941). There was an air raid on the same day 鈥 Saturday, 27th September.
I had a 3-tier Wedding cake made by mother who, with several friends, had saved ingredients and coupons to contribute to the making of the cake. When my brother got married his wedding cake was not all it appeared as some of it had been made of cardboard and iced to look real.
The reception was held at home and everyone rallied round to make sandwiches, cakes etc. Mother made my wedding dress; again the material had to be purchased
with use of coupons. My husband had used all his and some of my coupons to buy himself a new suit!
My husband was called up in June 1942.
My grandfather, who lived in Hull, was killed because he would not go down into the Air Raid shelter 鈥 my aunt was saved because she did.
